Hiring someone who can’t actually use the software your business runs on?

Yeah, we’ve been there too.

In a world where most job applications still rely on resumes and vague self-assessments, it’s no wonder so many hires fall short when it’s time to get hands-on.

Whether it’s Xero, Power BI, MYOB, Adobe, Canva, or any of the countless other tools businesses rely on daily... saying “I’m proficient” means very little without proof.

We built TestInvest to fix that.

Our mission

To make hiring smarter, faster, and more reliable by helping businesses test, measure, and trust real software skills before making a hire.

The problem

Hiring the wrong person is expensive.

Training the wrong person is exhausting.

And trusting someone who can’t deliver? That’s dangerous.

When we looked at why these mismatches happen, the answer was clear:
Most hiring decisions are based on gut feel, guesswork, or a shiny resume.

That might be fine for some roles but when your business runs on software, you need to know the person you’re hiring can actually use it.

Our founder story

Like many ideas, TestInvest started with a simple, frustrating moment.

Kris Kubank, a seasoned business owner and founder of an accounting firm, was hiring for her team. She asked a recruiter whether the candidate could actually use Xero, the accounting software her business ran on every day.

The answer?

“We don’t really have a way to test that.”

That one sentence sparked the beginning of something bigger.

Kris didn’t want to rely on resumes, interviews, or gut feelings. She needed certainty. She needed to know if someone could actually do the work... not just say they could.

She brought the problem to her son, Tom, a former professional athlete and entrepreneur with a sharp eye for inefficiencies and a deep respect for building things that matter. Together, they asked a bigger question:

Why isn’t there a simple, effective way to test someone’s software skills before you hire them?

So they got to work.

Kris brought her real-world industry insight, not just from accounting, but from years of navigating the challenges of hiring and training staff. Tom took the reins on building the solution, and in 2025, the two joined the ThincLab Pre-Accelerator Program run by the University of Adelaide to develop and refine their service.

They weren’t just solving a personal frustration. They were building something that thousands of other businesses quietly needed, too.

TestInvest was born and the mission hasn’t changed since:

Help businesses make better hires by validating real skills, not just resumes.
